1950's
Elvis Presley
In 1950's, Rock music had come to be known throughout the world and Elvis Presley appeared on the scene. A big-beat sound and the name of Elvis become popular in a moment, and their fans called Beatniks' fashion also come out.
Beatnik's fashion is a black leather jacket and slicked back Elvis style hairdos. In that time, Yves Saint-Laurent, who used to be a designer of Christian Dior, proposed kind of Beatnik's fashion that went all black leather suit, coat, and knit turtleneck with high boots in 1960. However, this fashion had a bad reputation in High-fashion in that time. But it was the first couture collection that cleared up admiration for young street fashion.
1970's
The Sex Pistols
In 1970s, Punk rock music and Punk fashion were born. As typical punk band, The sex Pistols, The clash would be mentioned, but The Sex Pistols is especially famous from point of view of fashion. Malcolm McLaren who is the promoter of this band and his partner, designer Vivienne Westwood created the Punk look.
Punk was a rejection of good things, so ripped and bleached clothes were the part of the fashion, and spiked hair dyed in bright colors was the part of it too. Additionally, black make-up and safety-pins' earrings were also characteristics of Punk fashion.
Fashion (Vivienne Westwood) and music (The Sex Pistols) combined created the British Punk culture.
1990's
Nirvana
Because of Nirvana's smash hit, the bands from Seattle had come to attract lots of attention and their fashion which was contrast to glittering fashion of 80's bands had also come under the spotlight. The fashion is kind of casual wear or dilapidated old clothes, and sometimes it can be looked as homeless. For instance ragged jeans, a flannel shirt, cardigan, and layered T-shirt is mark of grunge fashion. Grunge fashion is cheap, ugly, and anti-society fashion.
In high fashion world, Marc Jacobs introduced his Spring'93 grunge-inspired collection, and due to that, he grabbed a chance to succeed in fashion world.

The first fashion you describe, what Elvis wore, was rocker/greaser fashion. It was not really beatnik.
